Graduate Pt III – How to get that job!
You’re smart, enthusiastic and confident – you’re fresh out of university and are the perfect candidate for the job.
You’re hired! (cue the Lord Sugar pointing finger).
If only getting a graduate job was that easy. You might have completed university and got the piece of paper to show it, but this is the real and it’s competitive.
Over the past two blogs, I have looked at the state of the graduate job market, explained what businesses need to do to secure the best talent, in this blog, it’s about you – the candidate – having everything in place to get that job!
There may be an abundance of graduate jobs but you need to still out from the crowd and you still need sell yourself to the that key decision maker – the HR director!
As you start your job hunt – it’s important to use all the tools at your disposal and to set yourself above the competition. Here’s a few pointers to help you secure that all important first job.
Use an agency.
You’re looking to get on that first rung of the ladder, well this is a good start. Firstly, agencies have good contacts and connections with HR manager and directors and will, in most circumstances, be aware of jobs that are coming up before they advertised. They can assist with the process and, more importantly, get you inside the door. Not all businesses want to deal with the hassle of sifting hundreds of applications so find an agency that it is in the sector you want to work – and get on board.
Sort your CV out!
CVs are generally shocking and out of date – and that’s for people who’ve been in work. As you’re coming out of education and potentially with limited to no work experience, have a CV that looks the part and sells your skills and attributes is imperative. Again, an agency can help with this, find a professional that can assist or at the very least Google it!
At the very least your CV has to a flow to it and be easy to read. Excellent grammar throughout is a must. If it has errors – it’ll be binned! You might think colours and graphics do the job – yes if you want to be a graphic designer. Anything else – bin the doodles, the alternating fonts and colours.
Be clear and concise. Use key words that describe you and sell you. Always think of who will be reading it and will be asking ‘Why should I employ you?’
Ensure your skills are included and draw on your uni experiences, were you secretary or treasurer of a club for example.
Don’t be generic. It is likely you will be applying to a number of companies – so tweak your CV and ensure the skills highlighted in the job description match what you’re offering on your CV.
You need to think smart on two counts. How to use to find a job but also ensuring that your posts are going to scare off any employer! So, check your social media feeds (the HR people will) and make sure those ‘dodgy’ posts and images are well out of harm’s reach.
As for using it to your advantage – get a LinkedIn page and network. Make sure in your bio you make it obvious you are looking for work – do likewise on Twitter.
Make connections and post about looking for job. Recruiters and businesses use this to find potential candidates as well as posting jobs and there are groups to join, which are again to your benefit. Use the search to find jobs. The search can also be used on Facebook and Twitter with success. Use hashtags with keywords like hiring, jobs, recruiting or the actual job title or sector, e.g. #engineeringjobs.
Using these techniques and tips should ensure you are at least getting an interview – and with a shout of getting that job.
